Moving On

Well for those of you who haven't heard I have moved on. I had an amazing time in the Bahamas and a great trip up the coast to Boston but once we got there things where not as promised and agreed upon so I decided to move on. I've obtained a job as mate on the Nathaniel Bowditch in Rockland, Maine. I'll be spending the summer sailing around Maine and will update with more info and pics as soon as I can. There is a link to the right of this blog entry for the Bowditch so you can check her out.

Grumpy Old Men's Bucket List Cruise

Sailing away

Well we're currently sitting in Charleston waiting out some weather before heading North to Boston with a quick stop in NYC. Had a great sail with the "Grumpy Old Men". The fist day it was rainy and blowing 15-20kts I loved it, spent 4 hours on the helm that night making 11-12kts the whole time. Half of the passengers where a little queasy and 4-5 where chumming for sharks. The next 3 days where light and we had to motor sail for a day. We stopped at Cumberland Island for the better part of one day before heading out in the evening. Had a few exciting watches, the picture above is when a pod of about 20 dolphins decided to escort us. Alex saw them coming from the distance and it was cool seeing them heading for the boat from off the bow in a huge pack. Then they hung out and played on our bow wake for about 20min. Later that day just about dusk I saw flares off our starboard beam and woke the Captain. He contacted the Coast Guard and while we where waiting for them to check on exercises we realized it was two fighter jets playing above us dropping flares. Just then a huge sonic boom shook the boat as one of them got a little greedy with the throttle. Well I'm off for now I'll try to get more pics and videos up soon.

Oh Captain, My Captain

Just realized this week that I'm sailing under a celebrity!!
http://www.tallshipsexy.com/featured/2010/1/5/featured-daniel-evans.html

This is Captain Daniel Evans currently with the Liberty Clipper. He is friends with the creator of this magazine and did this article for her as a favor. That decision has been haunting him ever since. Some how a copy of this got posted around the boat this week for all the passengers to see and some proceeded to ask him for his autograph!

First day

It's my first full day here on Nassau, got to the ship last night and met the crew. When I arrived the captain was below with his girlfriend (also a member of the crew) and Jen was on deck to greet me. Her first words where "Hey, you must be Zach, welcome! You can just throw your stuff down anywhere for now. Do you want a beer?" Did I mention she already had one in her hands. I then met the Master Mate, Dan. After being introduced to the local hole in the wall, having another beer and meeting a few of the town drunks Dan and I headed back to the ship while the rest of the crew staggered on. Dan, good guy, we sat on deck over a few beers and he caught me up on everything. I'm going to like working with him, ashame he's leaving when we get back to Boston. Guess he decided he would rather be around his girlfriend in NY.

Well got up this morning, took a cold shower cuz the watter didn't get hot and I had no idea what switch to throw to make it that way! Everyone was still sleeping other then Margi (Cook) who was headed out to get provisions before the passengers arrived this afternoon. Then I wandered down the street till I found my own little piece of heaven in paradise.

Good hot coffee and cold air conditioning!!!

Paradise

Just then the skies parted, the winds calmed, and paradise was below us.

What a Flight

Ok, so I'm currently in the air on our way from Orlando to Nassau. Had to sit on the runway for over 1.5 hours due to thunderstorms but it was all worth it when we took off, the plane started bouncing up and down like the Tower of Terror and people started screaming!! I literally came up out of my seat, I loved it. Oh the joy I received at the terror of others. It's much smoother now and clearing up as we approach Nassau. Will be on the ground in 20min.

Phone Call

So I got a phone call from Andy (my Boss) on Saturday and he asked me if I could head down to Nassau early. I guess the current Bosun had to leave for family issues and they need me to head down early and take over. Now it's a rush to get everything done in a week, but I'm excited and can't wait!!
